The most important electric vehicle story in India right now is not happening in a city. It is happening on a freight corridor that runs from a cement plant at Nimbahera in Rajasthan to the ports of Dahej and  Nimbahera in Rajasthan to Tuna in Gujarat - roughly 1,450 kilometres of industrial India, now being worked by heavy-duty electric trucks in daily commercial service.

Wonder Cement's deployment of 250 Montra Electric Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 Tractor Trailers is India's largest electric heavy-truck order to date, and the corridor it serves crosses Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Initially, 30 trucks were flagged off from the Nimbahera Wonder Cement plant in July 2026 and are already hauling full payloads on daily duty cycles. This is what fleet electrification looks like when it leaves the pilot phase.

Why this corridor matters to every fleet operator

Sceptics of electric trucks in India have always had the same three objections: the trucks can't handle heavy loads, the chargers don't exist, and the economics only work on paper. This corridor answers all three at once - with a 55-tonne GCW tractor-trailer, a purpose-built charging network, and a cement major betting its inbound and outbound logistics on the result.

The heavy-duty electric truck: Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 Tractor Trailer

The truck doing the work is Montra Electric's Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 Tractor Trailer, built for long-haul duty:

  • 240 kW charger - CCS2 dual gun supports fast charging.
  • 282 kWh LFP battery with a range of up to 198* km per charge
  • 280 kW (380 HP) peak power and 2,000 Nm torque through a 6-speed AMT, with 18% continuous gradeability
  • 60-minute fast charging from 20% to 100% State of Charge (SOC)
  • Connected telematics streaming energy, uptime and driving data from every truck

The network: 13 charging stations, 99.5% uptime

Range anxiety is not solved by bigger batteries alone; it is solved by infrastructure that matches the route. The corridor is supported by 13 fixed charging stations, positioned so that charging happens inside the natural rhythm of a long-haul duty cycle - at loading points, rest stops and port turnarounds - rather than as dead time. A 20-100%( SOC) fast charge takes 60 minutes, which fits inside a mandated rest stop or a loading window.

Backing the fleet is Montra Electric's commitment of 95%+ assured uptime, supported by connected telematics on every truck and a service network built around the corridor.

With a premium comprehensive AMC 10 Years / 9 Lacs kms comes with an uptime assurance of 95%. However the voice of the customer in real time, Rhino 5538 EV is 99.5% uptime. Assuring the truck is available for all the load anytime anywhere. Building on the truck reliability and establishing the brand in electric trucking. Complements to the on-site service support at customer end which is available 24X7 to ensure customer operations will not be hampered.

How the trucks are used: inbound and outbound logistics

The deployment is not a demonstration lane. Wonder Cement is using the electric fleet across both directions of its plant logistics - inbound movement into Nimbahera and outbound dispatch of cement and clinker towards the Gujarat ports - on the same daily duty cycles its diesel fleet ran. The point of the corridor is that the trucks are earning revenue at full payload, every day, with charging built into the schedule rather than added to it.

The result: economics and emissions on the same side

Because electric running costs undercut diesel per kilometre, this is that rare decarbonisation move that shows up favourably in both the ESG report and the P&L. (We work through the cost-per-km mathematics in our diesel vs electric analysis.)

The emissions story is already proven at company scale: Montra Electric's fleet of 750+ vehicles on Indian roads has covered 30M+ km and saved 6M+ CO₂ .

What this means for fleet operators

For fleet operators watching from the sidelines, the significance is simple: procurement, financing, charging infrastructure and service for heavy electric trucks have now all been proven together, on Indian roads, by an operator whose business depends on the answer. Montra Electric eM&HCV - part of the Murugappa Group - builds the Rhino range at Manesar plant and their electric 3-Wheeler, SCV and tractor businesses in chennai, backed by group-scale manufacturing and financing muscle.

FAQ

What is India's longest electric freight corridor?

A roughly 1,450 km cement logistics corridor connecting Nimbahera (Rajasthan) with Dahej and Tuna ports in Gujarat, crossing four states, operated with 250 Montra Electric Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 Tractor Trailers and supported by 13 charging stations.

Can electric trucks handle 55-tonne loads in India?

Yes. The Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 Tractor Trailer operates at 55-tonne GCW with full payloads on daily duty cycles, with 280 kW (380 HP) of peak power, 2,000 Nm of torque and 18% continuous gradeability.

How do the trucks charge on a 1,450 km route?

Through 13 fixed charging stations along the corridor, aligned with loading and rest points. A 20-100% SOC fast charge takes 60 minutes.

Except cement, what other industries can this vehicle operate in?

Any lane with a predictable route, repeatable daily distances and dwell time the trucks already take. Beyond cement, the Rhino 5538 EV 4x2 Tractor Trailer is suited to coal and clinker movement, steel, mining, infrastructure and port haulage - wherever a 55-tonne payload runs the same corridor every day.
